What are moles?

Moles are small dark marks on the skin. They are a collection of skin pigment cells called melanocytes. Moles are usually brownish, although some may be darker or skin-coloured. They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and some have hair growing from them. Moles are usually circular or oval in shape, with a smooth edge. They can start to look different over time and sometimes respond to hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, adolescence and the menopause. Some moles even disappear over time or fall off, often without you realising. Some moles are present at birth. These are called congenital melanocytic naevi. However, most moles develop during the first 20 years of life (and sometimes into the 30s and 40s).

In general, moles often develop if you spend a lot of time in the sun, and tend to appear on parts of the body that catch the most sunlight, such as your face.

You can then go away and make an informed decision as to whether you wish to proceed with treatment. Whether you decide to go ahead or not, the consultation is completely free of charge.

*Please note all our our consultations require a £25 refundable deposit.

am I at risk?

Most moles are normal and harmless, but in a few cases they can develop into malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer. Malignant melanoma can appear anywhere on the body. It may be a dark, fast-growing spot where there was not one before, or a mole you already have that changes size, shape or colour, and bleeds, itches or reddens. Before any treatment the Doctor will assess your mole, if there is any doubt you will be referred back to your GP.

how would my mole be removed?

Before any treatment takes place you will require a consultation with one of our nurses to assess which treatment option would be appropriate for you.

Some moles are suitable for removal with the laser while some are more suitable for surgical excision. We have the
Iridex Venus (Erb:yag) laser which will ablate the mole from the surface of the skin. This method leaves very minimal scarring if any and does not require stitches because no incision is made. If your mole(s) need to be surgically removed then there will be a small scar left after the procedure.

If the doctor advises that your mole should be removed by surgical excision. A small sample of the mole (a biopsy) may be will be taken and sent for analysis. This is considered best practice when removing moles.

All the afore mentioned procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic. Small dressings are applied. If your mole is removed by surgical excision you will need to return to the clinic 5 - 7 days later to have your stitches removed. If you have a shave excision, a small scab will form, this usually drops off 7-10 days later. If you are suitable for mole removal via laser ablation then a 2 week review will be booked to check progress.
